Hollywood brought Little Women to new generations through several film adaptations in 1933, 19, along with a television series in 1978 and even a Japanese animated cartoon in 1987. Alcott combined the volumes and republished them in 1869 as Little Women.Įven after Alcott’s death, the story of the March sisters has continued to live on. Alcott originally wrote the book in two volumes, Little Women and Good Wives in 1868. Alcott wrote Little Women for her sisters, especially her sister Elizabeth (Beth), who is the only person who shares the same name as her literary counterpart. Even though these are fictional characters, Alcott immortalized herself and her family in Little Women. Her character was a refreshing change from the delicate, ingénue type of leading ladies that dominated literature for young people in the 1860s.Īlcott based the character of Jo on herself and the March sisters (Meg, Beth and Amy) on her own sisters (Anna, Elizabeth and May). What has made Little Women such a dynamic piece of literature in the 19th and 20th centuries? The main character Jo March was a popular heroine, because she was one of the first female characters to be portrayed as a tomboyish young woman who fought for her passions. After she was approached by her publisher to write a book for girls, Alcott wrote Little Women, which was loosely based her own experiences and those of her three sisters.
